People suffering from this ailment are often desperate for treatment that will relieve some of the pain. Because this condition stems from a pinched nerve in the lower back, effective treatment options can take time to be fully effective. While there are many therapies and medications that can help with the pain, one of the most effective treatments for long-term healing is shiatsu. An eastern massage technique that can help relax the muscles in the back and neck, this treatment can provide you with short-term pain relief and long-term healing.

// ]]>
Shiatsu dates back about one thousand years to the country of Japan. Initially a profession for the blind, it continues to be a popular treatment method for pain. The traditional shiatsu practitioner in Japan today is usually a small gentleman who is able to use his palms, thumbs, fingers and even knees to provide a rhythmic massage for pain relief. Applying exact pressure in specific spots will encourage the ki, or chi, to flow through the bones, arteries, muscles and skin of the affected area.

The core belief of shiatsu is that the body has the power to heal itself. The massage treatments and phases of intense pressure are meant to encourage that self-healing so the patients can enjoy long-term relief from painful conditions. Needles and medications are avoided as the focus lies on the body’s energy meridians and its natural power to heal.

// ]]>
Each shiatsu session will last about an hour and the person will feel incredibly relaxed when the session is done. Peace washes over the patient and the pain will lesson with each session. Shiatsu has been found to effectively eliminate the pain of sciatica in five sessions or less, making it one of the more effectivet treatment options.

Shiatsu works to reestablish the flow of healthy energy throughout the body. The massages are designed to remove energetic blocks that are believed to cause pain. They encourage the body’s healing energy to work naturally. The body’s natural balance is restored through the proper use of shiatsu.

Every shiatsu session is personalized to the individual patient. There is no specific, standard massage for any given ailment. Rather, the practitioner will study the patient and deliver a massage that is designed for that person’s specific conditions and source of pain. The ability to customize each treatment plan to every patient based on their flow of ki is part of what makes this treatment so effective.

If you have been suffering from the pain of sciatica, then you should look into the amazing results offered by shiatsu. You don’t have to live with the pain and you may be able to avoid surgery or other drastic treatments. Choose the treatment that will provide you with immediate pain relief and long-term healing. You will leave the sessions feeling more relaxed and enjoying a greater range of motion. You will also feel healthier overall than you have in years.

Are you suffering from Sciatica pain?
Symptoms often manifest as discomfort in the legs similar to a bad leg cramp or as immobilizing shooting pain that makes movement next to impossible. Sciatica is usually a symptom of one or more nerves in your lower spine being compressed or “pinched”. Therefore, relief is primarily achieved through lessening the pressure on these nerves, as well as toning the surrounding muscles in order to maintain this relief.

Pilates is a rapidly growing form of exercise popular for its ability to improve flexibility, posture, and abdominal strength, while simultaneously relieving back, neck, and joint pain. While Pilates is appropriate for any level of physical needs, it is consistent in its ability to improve flexibility, align your spine, and strengthen and tone your core, while creating a noticeable reduction in physical and emotional stress.

It is always important to check with your doctor regarding your specific condition before beginning any exercise or stretching routine.

WARM UP

In every form of exercise, warming up the muscles and increasing the circulation aids in preparing your body to get the most out of your effort. When in pain, begin with very low-impact activities to get the blood flowing such as a hot shower and a few minutes of walking at whatever speed is comfortable for you. If your pain does not allow for walking, just start with the shower! This will make a great difference in your bodies readiness for the Pilates stretches.

PILATES STRETCHES SPECIFIC TO SCIATICA RELIEF

-Lying Down Hamstring Stretch-

Most people with sciatica pain will find this stretch most beneficial from a lying position. Begin by lying down on the floor. Wrap a towel or belt around the foot of the leg to be stretched. Slowly raise your leg towards the ceiling just until you feel the stretch but without going so far as to cause pain. Remember to breathe. Make your movements gentle and steady, avoiding any kind of bouncing or jerking motions. Begin by holding this position four to ten seconds, gradually working yourself up to twenty or thirty seconds. Alternate legs up to eight or ten times each.

-Floor Pelvic Tilt-

The pelvic tilt is a common “go-to” exercise for those with lower back pain. Begin by lying down on a comfortable surface with your legs either flat on the floor or slightly bent. Inhale and tighten your abdominal muscles. This should cause your lower back to touch the floor and your buttocks to gently lift. Hold the stretch for several seconds, then exhale and release. Repeat eight to ten times.

-Hip Circles (also known as Knee Stirs)-

While still lying on your back, extend one leg out flat towards a wall while bringing your other leg up to a position at a 90 degree angle to the floor. While continuing to breathe, rotate this leg in a circle, focusing on the hip movement as opposed to the lower leg. Keep the rest of your body still and continue for eight rotations. Do this for both legs.

-Face Down Elbow Lift-

The backwards stretching motion of this exercise helps move the pain from your legs back into your lower back where it can be more effectively relieved. Lie face down on your stomach with your hands on the floor up near your head. Slowly bring yourself up onto your elbows, while drawing your stomach and hips down into the floor. If you are able to make it this far without pain, begin to lift yourself up onto your hands, raising your shoulders and back but continuing to leave your hips pressing into the floor. Exhale and release. Repeat three times.

For Sciatic pain, avoid stretches such as the Standing Toe Touch, the Lotus Position (crossing your legs), a Standing Hamstring Stretch, or a Bent Knee Thigh Stretch.

Remember to follow your breath, stay relaxed and slow with your movements, and practice these stretches several times a day as possible.

No other nerve is as long in the human body. The sciatic nerve can become pinched, and the most often causes of this condition are when a disc becomes herniated or when the piriformis muscle becomes tight. A natural treatment for this condition, which is called sciatica, comes from several exercises in Yoga, but people must consult a physician before they embark on a yoga routine.

// ]]>

The Cobra Pose

Performing the cobra pose will help to release tension in the back by forcing it to stretch. To do this move, lie face down on your mat with your hands underneath your shoulders and your elbows pulled in at your sides. The feet, the thighs and the pubis will need to be pressed into the floor. Take a deep breath and raise your body by straightening your arms. Raise your sternum while you are pushing your shoulder blades together as you arch your back. After you feel that your lower back is being stretched, maintain this position for 30 seconds.

The Bridge Pose

This pose will also work to release the tension that resides in the lower back while it strengthens this area and the hips. To begin, lie down face up with your knees up and your feet underneath your knees. Your feet should be side by side. Your arms will be placed by your sides with your palms facing the ceiling. Use your arms to propel your hips and lower back toward the ceiling stopping the movement once the hips and the floor are parallel to each other. Then, bring your collarbones up in the direction of your chin while looking up at the ceiling. Maintain for a duration of 30 seconds.

The Locust Pose

Performing this move will help to strengthen the lower back as well as increase the hips’ circulation. Lie face down on top of a towel that has been folded underneath your pelvis and rib cage. Your head will be resting comfortably on the ground while your arms are by your sides with the palms upward. Squeeze your gluteus maximus as you raise your arms and bring them parallel to the floor. As you stretch your fingers in the opposite direction of your body, stretch your shoulder blades so that they come together. Keep your gaze in front of you as you maintain your spinal column and neck in this position for a period of 30 seconds.

The Head-to-Knee Forward Bend Pose

When the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, it’s the lower back and the hamstrings that are most often disturbed by the condition. The head-to-knee forward bend will work to strengthen these areas. Fold a blanket and sit on it with your legs outstretched. Place your left heel against your right thigh. Your left hand will also be placed next to your inner right thigh. Your right hand will be placed near your right hip. With a straight back, turn your body to the right, stopping when your belly button reaches the middle of your right thigh. As you lower your forehead toward your right leg, make sure to push the right leg into the floor as you also push your elbows in the direction of the floor. If you can, stretch your arms out so you can grab your right, big toe. If not, just do your best. You can hold this position for 30 seconds but if it’s more comfortable, you can raise your elbows.

Sciatica occurs as pain located along the sciatic nerve. Although most people who are diagnosed with sciatica think of it as a disorder, it really is just a symptom that is signaling another problem involving the sciatic nerve or one of its many branches. The sciatic nerve originates in the spinal cord, branches out and runs down through the buttocks, continuing down through the back of the legs. This nerve is the longest nerve in the body and is responsible for controlling several of the lower leg muscles as well as providing feeling to the feet, legs and thighs. The most common symptom of sciatica is lower back pain that radiates down into the buttocks and continues down through the back of the thigh and calf. Pain may be experienced as mild aching or severe sharp pains.

Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica can be caused by several conditions although the most common cause is due to a herniated disc. Discs are located between each of the vertebra bones that make up the spine. The discs are made of a gel-like substance, which work to provide cushioning to the vertebral bones during movement. If a disc slips out of its normal position and presses on the sciatic nerve, sciatica can occur. Sciatica can also be caused by degenerative disc diseases such as spondylolisthesis, narrowing of the spine, piriformis muscle spasms and trauma.

Hot Tub Therapy For Sciatica
Sciatica often disappears on its own although it does take time and during the healing process, discomfort can be quite severe. Pain medications may help provide relief as well as mild exercise such as walking and stretching the leg and back muscles. Another pain remedy that is often recommended by physicians is hydrotherapy. When an individual is experiencing pain, this affects the chemicals in the brain resulting in increased stress, blood pressure and pulse. This can make the pain even more severe.

Hydrotherapy has proven to reverse these bodily reactions, thus reducing pain. Although hydrotherapy usually requires sessions with a physical therapist, it can also be done using a hot tub. By submerging the body in a hot tub, the body becomes weightless, relieving it of the constant pull of gravity. Hot tubs relax muscles, stimulate the immune system for improved healing, increase hormones that reduce stress and invigorate circulation for improved blood flow. The jets of the hot tub also produce the effects of massage therapy helping to relax muscles, increase blood circulation and reduce pain.

Even the bubbles that are produced from the jets have pain relieving powers as they help relax tense muscles, reduce stress, increase mobility and lessen pain. If you are suffering from the pain of sciatica, speak with your physician about the pain relieving benefits of hot tub therapy.

Stinging, burning, numb or prickling pain down the buttocks, legs, and sometimes feet, sciatic nerve pain isn’t something one desires to experience, but many people do suffer from it. There are many treatments available, but are any one of them a real cure for sciatica?Sciatica is a circumstance caused from the compression of a sciatic nerve. The nerves are found at the lower spine, running down the buttocks, back of the legs, and into the feet. It is common to have pain on one side or the other, but people get it on both sides occasionally. The sciatic nerves become inflamed along that route, causing the painful result. Relieving the pressure on the compressed nerve will reduce the pain.

// ]]>

Aligning The Body In Good Posture

Maintaining a proper posture can produce a sciatic nerve pain cure. It is important to not slump, slouch, or sit any way but straight up in the place one is sitting at. The head needs alignment with the cervix and backbone with the stomach tucked in. This is also true when standing and walking. A book balanced on the head can really help one see better positioning as well.

Muscles And Sciatic Pain

This exercise will cure pinched sciatic nerves by toning up and stretching out muscles. Put the hands on the thighs, bowing frontward as far as one can without pain. Breath deeply, staying in this place for at least 10 seconds, slowly returning to original placement. Repeat this practice 10 to 20 times.

// ]]>

Improve The Ability To Move And Bend Easily

This is another effective cure for sciatic pain that brings flexible muscles into play. Get up and move, walk, flex, and generally stretch all body parts possible. Moreover, here is a way to make the lumbar area of the back and pelvis strong. Lie flat with knees bent, placing hands underneath the buttocks. Lift the buttocks with the hands while constraining the belly. Relax and repeat as much as one can do.

A Cure For Sciatica

Lying flat, relax and define where the pain is at in the body. Slowly stretch the muscles with lifting and lowering the leg on that side. This will cure the immediate pain, but probably is not any long-term cure for sciatica. There are many cures for the problem of sciatica. A cure isn’t necessarily forever as one may think, it is simply an immediate remedy for an ongoing problem.

The mere thought of exercising while enduring sciatic pain seems nearly impossible or, better yet, out of the question for anyone who has experienced the excruciating pain. The first thing on anyone’s mind when that shooting pain begins is to sit or lay down, and that is expected. Rest is needed during and immediately after a sciatic pain flare up, but one should not use sciatic as an excuse to be inactive. A day or two will be needed to calm and relax the muscles, ease the pain, and feel like oneself again.

After a couple of days of relaxation exercise should be resumed. Exercise will help relieve the pain much quicker than resting. Physical activity will strengthen back muscles, condition spine structures, and offer support to the back. Moving the body is a healthy way to prevent pressure from being placed on the sciatic nerve which will result in pain. Inactivity will weaken muscles and place unnecessary strain on the back leading to more pain.

Consulting a therapist and/or chiropractor will help in devising a suitable exercise routine. The key is to strengthen muscles in an effort to reduce or even eliminate future sciatic flare ups. The exercises could help lessen pain almost immediately after beginning activity.

Sciatic Exercise Plans
The exercise regimen could be different from one patient to the next because each person suffers from sciatica differently. It is crucial to be informed and perform exercises that will alleviate pain and reduce sciatic episodes instead of aggravate the condition. For this reason, professional advice is needed.

A typical sciatic exercise plan will focus on stretching muscles especially the muscles that cause sciatic pain. These muscles are typically tight and need to be stretched to improve flexibility. One area that benefits from the stretches is the hamstring. The hamstrings location can cause stress to the lower back if not loose and flexible. The stress can aggravate the sciatica. The next area of focus is strengthening core muscles or abdominal muscles. By developing the muscles in the abdominal and back area, one has adequate support. The stretching and strengthening might not prevent all flare ups, but it will reduce episodes and lesson recovery time.

Simple exercises like leisurely walks that increase in intensity to a more face-paced walk is healthy for the body and will improve sciatica. Walking is a low intensity form of exercise that places little impact on the lower lumbar region of the body; an aerobic workout without the pain of sciatica.

When Should Exercise Begin?
Sciatica is condition that requires constant attention. Exercise should be part of one’s everyday routine. Taking care of one’s body with proper exercise will help eliminate the pain of sciatica in a healthy manner. Seek a physician’s advice before beginning an exercise routine to ensure that the right exercises are performed. Decreasing the amount of stress placed on one’s lower back and increasing the strength of one’s muscles will help with sciatica pain.

Many people suffer from sciatica which results from a pressure or trauma to the sciatica nerve in the legs. Typically, sciatica is an indication of a medical problem and should be treated as a symptom. Sciatica is treated through physical rehabilitation and yoga.

The sciatica pain can result from a herniated disk causing a shift in muscle and bone alignment. Pain can also be the caused by the piriformis muscle or a narrowing of the spinal cord connection area to the sciatica nerve root. Less frequently, tumors and bone spurs in the area of the sciatica nerve may cause the discomfort.

Consult with a licensed physician or chiropractor to see if a yoga routine will likely alleviate the condition. Yoga is not always a cure but can be an effective way of reducing, and possibly eliminating, sciatica pain over the course of a consistent and routine practice. Be sure to search for a competent yoga instructor that is familiar with specific treatments of sciatica so they can present a guided routine that will effectively address one’s individual sciatica pain.

Ultimately, pain is a threshold that should not be challenged when working to improve a sciatica condition. Ensuring that one respects the limitations being set by painful responses in the body will prevent the condition from becoming exacerbated. This is not a time to tough-it-out. Instead, perform the positions and routines in a slow and even pace to ensure steady stretching and muscle attention. The rehabilitation of sciatica pain is a slow process, but commitment to a routine will produce long term results. An additional benefit to treating sciatica pain through yoga practice is that the entire body will also reap benefits that will manifest as increased energy levels, muscle strength and greater flexibility.

Initial Treatment
At the onset of sciatica pain, it is important to ice the affected area in order to reduce inflammation and the possibility of the condition worsening. Utilizing an ice pack at an interval of 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off for a series of three cycles should alleviate the swelling.

Basic Stretching
The piriformis muscle is closely associated with the root area of the sciatica nerve. Thus, it can be extremely beneficial to practice stretching this muscle for immediate pain relief. This can be done sitting or lying by resting the ankle area of one leg across the thigh area of the other and leaning forward gently. If lying down, pull the thigh of the straightened leg gently toward one’s torso.

Ensure Muscle Balance
It is possible for the muscles surrounding the pelvis to become unbalanced due to strain or injury. To check, recline horizontally with hands tucked equally behind both hips at approximately belt level. If one’s hands sense greater pressure on one side, then the muscles are unbalanced and exercises should be used to realign them.

Keep Moving
A hesitation to move around as the result of sciatica pain is natural, but slow steady movement can actually loosen muscles and alleviate pain.

Sciatica clinical manifestation
For a number of individuals, sciatica pain becomes harsh and devastating. For some other people, the sciatica clinical manifestation might be rare and irritating, however, have the possibility to get worse. Typically, sciatica merely influences the 1 part of the lower body and the ach frequently spread out from the lower back towards the back of the hamstring muscle and downward throughout the leg. Low back pain might occur together with the leg pain, although classically the leg pain is noticeably harsher than the low back pain

Exercises for Sciatica Treatment
Exercises which include strengthening and stretching that aim the muscles of the lower back and thighs may assist decrease the clinical manifestation of sciatica. A few helpful exercises to assist reduce pain related with sciatica embrace: Piriformis muscle stretches, Hamstring stretches, low back stretches and core strengthening. The hamstring stretch is carried out at the same time as lying on your back side. There are no wonder making a stretches for sciatica treatment. These are usually carried out by physical education classes of comprehensive secondary school as well as qualified athletes. Hanging the back side of your leg, raise your knee till it becomes at right angles to the surface of the earth. Once in this situation, make straight your legs.

Physical Therapy for Sciatica Treatment
Physical therapy exercises, which integrate stretching, aerobic conditioning and strengthening, are an innermost constituent of nearly all sciatica treatment arrangement.
When individuals who are suffering with sciatica take part in a usual program of gentle
Physical therapy exercises, they can get better more rapidly from sciatica pain and are less probable to have a potential episodes of sciatica in the future.

Surgery the last Sciatica Treatment option
If the sciatica pain is very harsh and has not been improved within 6 to 12 weeks, it is commonly logical to think about lower back surgical treatment. It is based on the reason and the extent of the sciatica pain. One of the two surgical operation procedures will in general be well thought-out: The first one is small open surgery (or microdiscectomy) And the second one is lumbar laminectomy (open decompression)

The term sciatica is used to indicate inflammation of the sciatic nerve. While normally the sciatic nerve does its job without trouble, once an inflammation of the nerve develops the individual becomes all too painfully aware of its presence. There are two sciatic nerves, each providing an information highway from the spinal cord through a leg. From the lumbosacral region of the lower back, these nerves pass behind the hip joint and extend down the legs to deliver information to and from the legs.

What is the sciatic nerve supposed to do?

Like most nerves the sciatic has two jobs: It relays instructions from the brain to the legs and sends sensory information back to the brain. Inflammation of the nerve interferes with both of these nerve functions. Due to a weaker impulse being sent to one leg, an individual may develope an uneven gait.

What is the source of sciatic pain?

Generally the cause of inflammation to the nerve is a herniated disc in the region of the sciatic nerve’s source. When a disc, whose purpose is to provide cushioning between vertebras, is put under too much pressure the interior of the disc bulges out affecting the nerve and precipitating inflammation. The inflammation is the body’s way of trying to protect itself. There are other less common causes among which are spinal spondylolisthesis, stenosis, and piriformis syndrome.

How will you know if you have sciatic?

* A tendency to take uneven steps
* Sharp electric-jolt type of pain in the upper hip or lower back on one side
* A dull ache aching feeling in a buttock or leg
* Shooting pain that travels down one buttock and down the leg
* A “catch” in the hip when walking
* Sensation of painful numbness like the pins-and-needles feeling of a limb that’s gone to sleep
* A weakness in one leg

Sciatica can range from mildly annoying to debilitating; in the more severe cases squatting, coughing or sneezing can result in a sharp temporary increase in pain.

Who is at risk for sciatica?

In theory any one can develop sciatica but in practice it usually first appears between the ages of 30 and 50, and is more likely to develop in those who are overweight and those who are regularly doing heavy lifting. It can appear suddenly precipitated by a specific action but can just as readily develop slowly without any specific causation.

What can be done for sciatica?

In very severe cases surgery to repair the disc might be necessary but usually after X-rays are taken and evaluated a doctor or chiropractor will initiate a series of exercises to strengthen your back and perhaps medication to reduce inflammation.

Sciatica is an irritation of the sciatic nerve which runs the entire length of the lower half of the body, which is why sciatic pain can feel like it’s shooting down your legs. Sometimes an injury to the discs in the spine can cause a bout of sciatica, other times any type of muscle strain in the lower back can cause symptoms. Any unusual pressure on the sciatic nerve can cause intense pain. Undiagnosed and untreated, the pain can continue off and on for months or years.

How Long Will The Pain Last?
An acute bout of sciatica is can last four to six weeks. Chronic sciatica can last longer than six weeks and the intensity of painful symptoms can be mixed with intervals of less pain or no pain. Acute sciatica will usually go away on it’s own. Sufferers can treat themselves with over-the-counter pain medicine or herbal supplements and by applying hot and cold packs to the lower back and legs, which also works with chronic sciatica.

Treatment
In cases where people with chronic sciatica are exhibiting other symptoms, such as bladder problems, or the pain becomes so severe as to be debilitating, a physician should be consulted. Doctors can recommend physical therapy treatments, which can also include massage and hot tub sessions and some of the latest and safest prescription pain killers can be prescribed. If serious medical issues are ruled out, exercise is a wonderful treatment for bouts of sciatica. Many people are able to significantly limit their sciatica symptoms with yoga and stretching exercises on a daily basis. The right exercises can keep the muscles in the back limber and prevent painful sciatica symptoms.
